What is an emblem ring and why is it currently so popular with guys?

Is the emblem ring truly this season's hottest menswear accessory? It is after all, a perennial favvourite of fashion labels like Versace.

You have probably read about Malaysian personality Wak Doyok getting into trouble for commissioning a particular design of an emblem ring. The specifics of what he did aside, the emblem ring is indeed a big part of the menswear trend for Spring/Summer 2020.

The emblem ring (otherwise also known as the signet ring) is simply a flashy version of your everyday ring. It sports a symbol, crest or initial at the top, which back in ancient Rome or Greece was used to stamp the wax seal of important documents.

This practice has been put to rest – at least for the general populace. The modern man who now wears an emblem ring is doing it for the fashion value. Yes, it may bring to mind visions of a mobster surrounded by his henchmen. But it is currently a big trend for guys.

Men in general don't have too many options when it comes to accesorising. Aside from stylish man bags, it is down to just watches and shoes. Unless of course, you're someone style-defining like Ezra Miller. Or perhaps take the Michael B. Jordan route and design your own collection.

In 2018, with the second season of Netflix’s American Crime Story, the emblem ring was thrust into the spotlight. Telling the story of Gianni Versace’s murder, the series showed the Italian fashion designer wearing the ostentatious accessory.

Although, it has been seen in pop culture even before that. Henry Cavill sported one as the debonair CIA agent Napoleon Solo in 2015’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E.. Colin Firth wore an emblem ring too in A Single Man back in 2009.

In August last year, Vogue UK claimed that emblem rings are back in fashion. Earlier this year, menswear portal Mr Porter even went so far as to describe it as “the men’s jewellery trend of 2020”.

Do a quick Google search and you’ll find scores of advice on how to pull of the look. From choosing a more demure material (like silver) to toning down on the embellishments (no diamonds!), it is a matter of keeping it to good taste.

Scores of fashion houses have their own versions of the ring, but you can also get it custom made – if you want something truly unique. Just be mindful of the emblem that you choose to feature on it...
