Swarovski steals the limelight in Disney's 'Cinderella'

It’s the colour of the Swarovski crystal that was used on the stunning slipper created for Cinderella to wear to the ball.

Founded in 1895 in Austria, Swarovski designs, manufactures and markets high-quality crystals, genuine gemstones and created stones. Swarovski collaborated with the Academy Award winning costume designer Sandy Powell to add some fairy tale sparkle to Disney’s new enchanting live action film Cinderella, which opens in Malaysia tomorrow.

Powell worked with a team of eight Swarovski technicians at the brand’s headquarters in Austria to design the unique crystal slipper given to Cinderella by her Fairy Godmother.

Directed by Academy Award nominee Kenneth Branagh and starring Lily James (Downton Abbey) in the title role, Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett, Richard Madden (Game Of Thrones) and Academy Award nominee Helena Bonham Carter, Cinderella is due for release in Malaysia on March 12.

Swarovski created five pairs of shoes for this film and it took six versions before the perfect slipper was realised. The six-inch heeled slipper weighs just over one kilogram per slipper. Each slipper is hewn from three solid crystal pieces and contains 221 crystal facets to ensure the greatest light reflecting ability.

“Swarovski is as much about innovation as it is about glamour and sparkle, so we are especially thrilled to have helped Sandy realise her vision for the crystal slipper, a technically challenging sculptural piece whose 221 crystal facets refract the light in the most enchanting way. Like Dorothy’s ruby slipper, it is an icon of storytelling and absolutely central to the plot, so it had to be perfect,” says Nadja Swarovski, member of the Swarovski Executive Board, in a press statement.

Helena Bonham Carter who played the Fairy God Mother wore a dress complete with 100,000 crystals from Swarovski, along with her jewellery, hair and wand.

The six-inch heeled slipper is hewn from three solid crystal pieces and contains 221 crystal facets to ensure the greatest light-reflecting ability.

Swarovski provided over 1.7 million crystals for over 15 costumes, props, jewellery, accessories and hair and make-up. The crystals used were beads, round stones, pendants, flat backs and fancy stones. All in, there were 11 crystal colours and four crystal effects used namely Light Sapphire, Rose Water Opal, Pacific Opal, Peridot, Crystal F, Crystal, Emerald F, Fern Green F, Aquamarine F, Olivine F, Light Siam F, Crystal Moonlight, Crystal Golden Shadow, Crystal AB and Crystal Copper.

In addition they opened their archives and loaned over 150 vintage Swarovski tiaras and jewellery pieces to lend glamour to the ball scene.

Well, it’s crystal clear that the Academy Award winning stars will just have to compete with these breathtaking sparklers for attention in this lavish classic fairy tale production!
