Anastasia and Drizella will finally take centrestage as Disney announced Stepsisters, a live-action film revolving around Cinderella’s cruel stepsisters and their back stories.

The spinoff was announced by Deadline in an exclusive report, where Akiva Schaffer is tapped to direct the film. Dan Gregor and Doug Mand will pen the screenplay based on Michael Montemayor’s original script.

Meanwhile, Disney live-action EVP Jessica Virtue and creative executive Cady Stark will oversee the film’s production, while Ali Bell was chosen as the producer.

Details on who will star as the titular stepsisters and the release date are yet to be announced, as of this writing.

Anastasia and Drizella Tremaine are known as Cinderella’s stepsisters in the 1950 animated film Cinderella, and have a history of mistreating the title character. In the film’s second and third instalments, Anastasia underwent a change of heart and eventually came to good terms with Cinderella. She also finds love with the town baker.

Stepsisters continues Disney’s streak of producing live-action remakes of its animated titles. Moana led by Catherine Laga’aia and Dwayne Johnson, is set to be released in July 2026, while Lilo & Stitch 2 is scheduled for a May 2028 premiere.

Other live-action projects coming up include Tangled, Hercules, Gaston, and Cruella 2. – Philippine Daily Inquirer/Asia News Network
