With a little extra planning, your canine companion can join in the fun when you head to the beach.
To help dog owners have the safest possible experience with their dogs, the American Kennel Club offers the following tips:
Have plenty of fresh water on hand to keep your dog from lapping up ocean water. The high sodium content in salt water along with other contaminants can be harmful to your pup’s health. Supplying your dog with fresh water will keep them hydrated and decrease their chances of getting sick.
If you are going to be at the beach for an extended duration of time, be sure to bring an umbrella with you. This will ensure your pup has a place to get out of the sun and rest in the shade.
Taking a dip is a good way for your dog to cool off. Many dogs like swimming, though not all dogs know how. Start your dog off slowly in shallow water and with you nearby for support.
You can begin training with a life vest to ease your dog into swimming. Even after they’ve learned how to swim, it’s a good idea to keep a life jacket on hand as a precaution.
Dogs can get sunburn, just like humans! Hairless dogs or dogs that have short and light-coloured coats are especially vulnerable to the sun. It is always wise to apply a dog-friendly sunblock to make sure your four-legged friend is protected.
After your dog is done playing, don’t forget to rinse them off. The bacteria from oceans, lakes and rivers can make your pet sick. Make sure to rinse or shampoo your dog’s coat and always take special care to clean and dry out their ears as well. – American Kennel Club/Tribune News Service
