National Caregivers Day was celebrated on Feb 21 this year. It’s a day dedicated to recognising and honouring caregivers for their invaluable contributions to their families, friends, and communities.
Caregivers are a truly special group of people, whether they provide care out of compassion and love or as part of their professional duties. It takes immense tolerance, patience, and sacrifice to care for those who need support on a daily basis.
I would like to highlight the remarkable efforts of two homes that cater to the needs of the less fortunate – true havens of care and compassion.
The first home is located just a stone’s throw away from my residence. One of its residents is a man I often see walking past my house several times a day.
This gentleman, who is intellectually challenged, has an unkempt appearance and an unpredictable routine. Although nobody knows exactly where he goes each day, his presence is familiar in the neighbourhood.
Sometimes, he walks by quietly without saying a word, and thankfully, he seems harmless. However, there are times when he can be heard shouting angrily, seemingly engaged in an argument with himself.
I have the utmost respect for the caregivers at this home. Accommodating and caring for someone with such unpredictable behaviour requires extraordinary patience, love, and understanding. The fact that this man has been a long-term resident speaks volumes about their dedication and compassion.
The home certainly deserves the highest recognition for its ability to provide care and stability for him. Their commitment is nothing short of remarkable.
The second home I wish to acknowledge is located in Kuala Kubu Baru. This story shifts from an unknown resident to someone I’ve known personally for many years – Arumaiji Balasundram, the dedicated manager of a home for girls from impoverished families.
I have known Arumaiji since the 1960s when we were schoolmates at Mahmud Primary School in Raub. Though he was a year senior to me, our shared Ceylonese heritage and small-town upbringing made us close family friends.
Arumaiji is a warm and lively individual, always ready with a smile and good conversation. It never crossed my mind back then that he would choose such a noble path – one that many retirees might shy away from in favour of leisure and relaxation.
Last July, I made it a point to visit him at the home and pay my respects for his selfless work. The home is nestled far from the hustle and bustle of city life, offering an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.
Arumaiji welcomed me with open arms and a warm bear hug. Our conversation lasted over an hour, during which his passion and dedication became evident. As he spoke, I listened intently, taking notes on his inspiring journey.
He described feeling a divine calling to serve children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Driven by this purpose, he committed himself to nurturing and guiding these children – helping them become socially well-adjusted, morally upright, spiritually inclined, and self-confident and useful citizens.
Despite the challenges, Arumaiji remains steadfast in his mission to improve the lives of these children. His dedication even extends to taking them for specialist medical treatment in Kuala Lumpur, a testament to his unconditional love and concern for their well-being.
The greatest reward for Arumaiji is witnessing these children complete their education, gain self-esteem, and grow into responsible, capable adults. His tireless efforts have truly made a difference in their lives.
Salutations to Arumaiji for his sacrifices and hard work. May his dedication continue to inspire and uplift those around him for many years to come.
