WHAT is digestion? It’s a process by which complex food structures are broken down into simple molecules and absorbed by the body, primarily in the small intestines. Through digestion, the body obtains the nutrition it requires to function.

The process is both mechanical (chewing and mixing) and chemical (enzymatic). Smooth muscles lining the gut contract to propel food along the gastrointestinal tract (or gut), mix it with digestive enzymes, and eventually excrete it.
