My sister has just given birth to a baby boy. Recently, his skin turned a yellowish colour, and she had to admit him to hospital. What happened?
This yellowish discolouration is called jaundice. It is very common amongst newborns. Jaundice is derived from the French word “jaune”, which means yellow. It is both a symptom and a sign, which means the yellowish discolouration can be noticed on the skin and the whites of the eyes. It is not a disease per se, though it can be caused by many diseases.
