As we get close to the rehearsal call time of 6pm, kids start trickling in, dropped off by their parents to spend the next four hours at the Temple of Fine Arts in Brickfields, where intensive preparation is underway for the opening of their show Bites of Delights tomorrow.
Bites of Delights is a musical theatre show that will be performed entirely by the cast of 26 children. The audience will be taken on a musical journey of Asian folklore, told through acting, dancing, and live gamelan music, performed entirely by the cast. It is produced by Rhythm in Bronze, the award-winning contemporary Malaysian gamelan group, together with children’s theatre group Jumping Jellybeans.
The people behind the show are executive producer, Sharmini Ratnasingam, artistic directors, Jillian Ooi and Shanthini Venugopal, theatre director, Ghafir Akbar and music director Lorna Henderson.
“We want to bring gamelan into the foreground, to be on equal playing field with the theatre aspect. This is the first time Rhythm in Bronze will go entirely off stage in a production. It’s just the kids on stage,” says the executive producer’s assistant Nezia Azmi, who took me through the premise behind the show.
