Starchild: What’s your favourite alphabet? Here’s what Malaysian kids say

Macke Lau Jae Yun, 10

Have you ever stopped to think about how important alphabets are? Without them, we wouldn't be able to write stories, send messages, read books or even play fun word games.

Alphabets are the building blocks of language, and they help us share our thoughts and ideas with others.

The English alphabet has 26 letters, starting from A all the way to Z.

Each letter has its own shape and sound, and when we put them together, we can form words. For example, the letters C, A and T form the word 'cat'. Change one letter to B, and you get 'bat'. Just like that, alphabets can create endless words!

Some letters are extra fun because of the words they start with. The letter Z gives us words like 'zebra' and 'zoom', which sound playful and lively.

Learning alphabets is the first step to reading and writing. That's why young children spend a lot of time singing the ABC song, tracing letters and playing games with them. Once you know your alphabets well, you can open the door to a world of books, stories and knowledge.

What’s your favourite alphabet? Is it A for apple, B for balloon, or maybe M for Malaysia? Here are the letters from Starchild readers on the topic, My favourite alphabet.

Macke Lau Jae Yun, 10, says his favourite alphabet is M. It stands for so many things. It includes money, mother, Max (my cousin), McDonald's and macaroons. M also stands for many games I like to play like Monopoly. But the most important thing is my name... Magnificent Macke!

Wan Mikhail Wan Ahmad Shafiq, eight, writes: "My favourite letter is B because I love bees. They are small, cute and they make honey. I like to watch bees fly around flowers. The letter B also looks like a bee with two round wings."

Older sister Wan Maysa Wan Ahmad Shafiq, 10, likes ice cream and her favourite letter is the letter I. "Ice cream is sweet and comes in many colours. My favourite flavour is strawberry. Every time I see the letter I, I think of having a cold and yummy treat."

"My favourite letter is A because it feels so positive and full of energy. There are so many good words that begin with A, like amazing, awesome, active and adventurous. It reminds me to always aim high and try my best in everything I do," says Erica Sophia, 12.

"My favourite alphabet is the letter H because my mother's name starts with that letter. It reminds me of her kindness and warmth she brings into my life. Every time I see it, I feel a little spark of comfort and love. I love my mother very much," says Anya Jesu Dass, seven.
