Starchild: Malaysian children share drawings of their favourite emojis

Jane Ng Ai Wen, 7

Raise your hand if you like to use different types of emojis whenever you send messages to your friends.

Emojis are popular because they are cute and can represent facial expressions, common objects and even places to complement our messages. Which are some of your favourite emojis?

The first emoji was created by Shigetaka Kurita in 1999 for cellphones and pagers and as of last year, there are over 200 emojis available to use. Do you know that the birthday cake and pizza emojis are the most common food emojis used all year round?

In 2015, emojis became more inclusive by including faces with different skin tones.

World Emoji Day is celebrated today. Let’s hear what Starchild readers had to say on the topic, Emoji Day.

“My favourite emoji is the sushi emoji because I like to eat sushi. If I can create my own special emoji, it will be an emoji that looks like me. When I am texting my friends, I can put the emoji to represent me, ” says Low Jia Shien, nine.
