Taiwanese singer Angela Chang gave her fans a fright after she suffered a health scare during her concert in China on Aug 23.
The 44-year-old, who is currently on her Play Master concert tour, held two shows in Chengdu on Aug 22 and 23.
During the performance of her song Doesn’t Hurt (2007) on Aug 23, fans in the audience noticed that she did not seem quite herself, as she was occasionally tugging at her collar and the hem of her skirt.
According to videos circulating on Chinese social media, medical staff rushed onto the stage during a costume change to measure Chang’s blood pressure and fit her with a nasal oxygen cannula.
Staff members were also seen massaging one of her hands and fanning her.
Chang could be seen on a large screen tearing up, with the screen subsequently displaying the message: “I’m sorry, please give me three minutes.”
Audience members told Chinese media that the singer returned to the stage after a brief rest and performed songs such as Invisible Wings (2006) and Big Kid (2025).
Chang later explained to her fans at the concert that she had begun to feel her heart struggling to cope when she changed into her heavy costume outfit.
“It may have been due to the weather or the weight of the costume,” she said, apologising to fans for keeping them waiting while they did not know what was happening on stage.
She thanked them for their concern and assured them that she would stop her performance if she felt unwell.
Chang rose to prominence after starring in Taiwanese idol dramas My MVP Valentine and and At The Dolphin Bay (2003). She released her debut studio album Over The Rainbow in 2004.
She was in 2008 diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse, a hereditary condition which generally carries a low risk of complications but could lead to cardiac arrest in rare severe cases. She went to Canada for medical treatment and took a break from her career for several months.
Chang took to social media late on Aug 23 to further assure her fans that she was fine.
“I’m sorry to have worried everyone,” she wrote in Chinese. “A medical team was present throughout my concert, just in case. This was to ensure my safety as well as that of all the audience members present.”
The singer said she was grateful to the medical team for monitoring her condition in real time and taking appropriate measures.
“I’ve also undergone a more comprehensive check-up after the concert ended, and everything is fine at the moment,” she wrote. “Thank you to everyone for your concern.”
Chang is scheduled to perform next in Guiyang in China’s Guizhou province on Aug 29. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
