Maddox Jolie Pitt, the oldest son of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, wants to legally drop his father’s surname.

Maddox made the request, hoping instead to go by only his mother’s name, in court documents obtained by US Weekly. If approved, he will be known as “Maddox Chivan Jolie” going forward.

It comes after the 24-year-old opted to drop “Pitt” from his name in the credits of the movie Couture. He worked alongside his Oscar-winning mother as an assistant director on the 2025 film.

Jolie in March 2002 adopted Maddox, who was born in Cambodia, when he was seven months old. Three years later, she went on to adopt daughter Zahara from Ethiopia.

When Pitt and Jolie first sparked their romance, the Moneyball actor revealed his intentions to legally adopt Jolie’s children. He did so in January 2006, in addition to adopting Pax a couple years later.

Jolie initially adopted Pax in 2007.

The former couple also share Shiloh, 20, and twins Vivienne and Knox, both 17. Pitt and Jolie were together for more than decade, tying the knot in 2014 before legally separating in 2016. They formally divorced in 2024.

Maddox isn’t the first to ditch his father’s name. Shiloh legally filed to drop “Pitt” on her 18th birthday, and her request was granted in 2024. It was also recently reported that Zahara did not have any contact with her father in the lead-up to her graduation from Spelman College. According to TMZ, Jolie and the rest of her children traveled to Atlanta for the ceremony. – New York Daily News/Tribune News Service
