An actor and comedian has died from a rare form of cancer.

According to an update posted to a GoFundMe page, Alex Duong died on Saturday. He was 42.

Duong was best known for his recurring role as Sonny Le in the CBS police procedural Blue Bloods, but he also appeared in popular shows like Dexter, Everybody Hates Chris, Pretty Little Liars and The Young And The Restless.

He was also a stand-up comedian in Los Angeles and performed at venues like the Comedy Store

“With the heaviest hearts, we share that our dear Alex passed away peacefully this morning, surrounded by love and dear friends. He was comfortable and thankfully out of pain,” Hilarie Steele, who started the fundraising page, said in an update on March 28.

According to her post, Duong’s wife, Christina Duong, and daughter, Everest, “were able to see him last night, and he was alert enough to say goodbye to his little girl, whom he has treasured every moment since the day she was born.”

The post added that the family is “devastated, but so grateful for the support, prayers, and generosity you have all shown during this unimaginable time.”

Duong was diagnosed with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive soft tissue cancer that develops from immature skeletal muscle cells. It commonly occurs in the limbs or torso, growing rapidly and often spreading before diagnosis.

According to an earlier update on March 27, Duong had gone into septic shock and was “fighting for his life.”

The GoFundMe page had raised more than US$124,000 in funds that will be used to help provide stability for his family and to build a college fund for Everest. – mlive.com/Tribune News Service
