Chinese actress Liu Xiaoqing has drawn mixed reactions for her performance in the micro-drama Jin Xiu An Ran.

According to reports, the 75-year-old portrays a woman in her 20s seeking a fresh start after being abandoned by her husband and child.

She also shares a kissing scene with co-star Jin Jia, who's 30 years her junior.

Following the drama's release, the significant age gap quickly became a trending topic, with many netizens expressing shock at the casting.

"Were there no younger actresses who could take on the role?" one person asked.

Another commented: "I think she is more suited to play a motherly role."

"Please take on roles that better match your age," added a third.

This isn't the first time Liu has sparked discussion for playing characters much younger than her.

In 2023, the actress – who was 67 at the time – made headlines for portraying a 17-year-old in the war film Ice Sniper 2.

She also played a 16-year-old girl named Ouyang Feiyan in the 2014 drama Heroes Of Sui And Tang Dynasties 3. She was 58 then.

In a past interview with Chinese media, Liu said she enjoys trying various roles, refusing to be "fixed on a certain image".

"I'm not young, but my passion and pursuit for acting remain unchanged. I want to show different charms by constantly challenging myself," she said.
