South Indian cinema icons Kamal Haasan and Rajnikanth are set to reunite on screen after nearly five decades, marking their first film together since appearing in several movies between the late 1970s and early 1980s.

The collaboration is confirmed through an official promotional video released by the film’s producer, Indian production company Red Giant Movies, with the project tentatively titled KH x RK Reunion.

Details of the Tamil film’s storyline remain under wraps, but the promotional material suggests a stylised narrative centred on a face-off between the two veteran actors, with a possible grey-shaded dynamic rather than a conventional hero-villain pairing.

The movie will be directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, whose 2023 release Jailer, starring Rajnikanth, was a major box-office success.

Both actors, widely regarded as among the most influential figures in Indian cinema, last shared significant screen space during the early stages of their careers before establishing themselves as leading stars in their own right.

Kamal, a three-time National Film Award winner in India, is known for his performances in films such as Nayakan, Indian, Hey Ram and Anbe Sivam, earning recognition for his versatility and experimental approach to cinema.

Rajnikanth, meanwhile, cemented his status as one of India’s biggest stars through blockbuster films including Baasha, Padaiyappa, Sivaji The Boss and Enthiran

He is widely credited with paving the way for Tamil cinema’s expansion into a major commercial industry and enjoys a strong fan base beyond India, particularly in countries such as Japan.

The two actors’ last full-fledged collaboration was the 1979 fantasy film Allauddinum Albhutha Vilakkum, followed by their final shared screen appearance in the 1981 comedy Thillu Mullu, where Kamal made a cameo appearance.

The reunion has generated strong reactions online, with many describing it as a landmark moment for Tamil cinema.

"The three-minute, 46-second promo video gives a sneak peek of both actors questioning their outfits. As their looks are revealed, the two are seen twinning in retro outfits,” according to an Indian media report.

Further details, including the film’s title, release date and full cast, are expected to be announced in due course. – Bernama
