Singer-songwriter Koo Jun-yup — best known as DJ Koo — expressed his love for his late wife Barbie Hsu on her first death anniversary, saying they will be “together forever” when the time comes for them to meet again.

Koo penned a heartfelt letter to Hsu on Instagram Tuesday, Feb 3, admitting that the latter’s death is still “painful” for him up to this day. His letter came after a statue in her honour was unveiled at a private cemetery in New Taipei City, Taiwan.

“To my eternal love, my everything, Xiyuan. Hee-won, how are you there? How are you there? Is it cold? Is it hot? I worry about you all the time,” he began via an allkpop translation, referring to the singer-actress with her birth and Korean name.

“When I sit absentmindedly on one corner of the bed in the empty room, I still don’t know if this is reality or a dream. I wish it were a dream, and my chest feels heavy and painful.”

Though it’s been a year since Hsu’s untimely death, the singer-songwriter confessed that he still feels very emotional when he looks back at that day. He then apologised for showing his “weakest side” to her.

“I’m sorry for showing you such a weak side of me. But this is the last way I have to soothe my longing for you. I hope you understand. My Xiyuan, when we meet again next time, forever, we will be together.”

Koo added that he will love her eternally. “I miss you. I miss you so much. I miss you to death. Your eternal oppa.”

‘A man who truly loved her’

Meanwhile, Dee Hsu (the Meteor Garden star’s sister) thanked Koo on Instagram for putting up a statue in the late actress-singer’s honor, saying it is a way of keeping her memory alive.

“I hope that those who love Barbie Hsu can come and see her and talk to her when they miss her. Thank you also to all the close relatives and friends who came today to offer my sister a flower in the rain. If it had been sunny today, it wouldn’t have been like my sister at all,” she said.

Dee, a well-known TV host, actress, and singer in Taiwan, described Koo as a “man who truly loved” the late actress without asking for anything in return.

“When I’m deep in grief, thinking of my brother-in-law who was by my sister’s side for the three years before she passed away — a man who truly loved her, asked for nothing in return, and didn’t crave anything beyond love, protecting her with a pure, simple, and innocent heart — brings me peace. So I’m truly grateful to my brother-in-law!” she said.

“Today, when my mother saw Barbie Hsu’s statue, she said, ‘Baby, you’ve been reborn!’ I believe my mother’s heart is filled with joy today,” she continued, sharing what the late actress’ mother thought of the ceremony.

Hsu rose to prominence after starring as Shancai in the Taiwanese adaptation of Meteor Garden, which became one of the biggest Asian dramas in the 2000s. She went on to star in several dramas and films, but stepped back from her entertainment career after getting married.

She first married Chinese businessman Wang Xiaofei in 2011, and their divorce was finalised 10 years later. She then wed Koo in 2022, several years after they first started dating. – Philippine Daily Inquirer/Asia News Network
