Singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado celebrated the 25th anniversary of her debut album by declaring she doesn’t anticipate taking the stage any time in “the foreseeable future.”

The 46-year-old Canadian popstar’s debut album, Whoa, Nelly!, produced the hit singles I’m Like A Bird and Turn Off The Light, and made her a Grammy Award winner in 2001.

In an Instagram message posted early Friday (Oct 24) morning, Furtado said she’s been fortunate to have reached a new generation of fans who’ve gotten to know her old music and couldn’t be more grateful.

“All this aside, I have decided to step away from performance for the foreseeable future and pursue some other creative and personal endeavours that I feel would better suit this next phase of my life,” she wrote.

Furtado said she has “enjoyed [her] career immensely” and will always identify as a songwriter. She went on to thank all of the people behind the scenes who helped her make her “pop dreams come true” and said she hopes the “new generation of artists” enjoy similar success.

She didn’t provide specific details on what she plans to do next.

Furtado previously stepped away from music following the release of her 2017 album The Ride, according to NowToronto.com. However, she reemerged to take the stage with fellow Canadian Drake in 2022.

Last year, the mother of three released her latest album, 7 – her first in seven years – and promoted it with a European summer tour that wound down in Germany this August. – New York Daily News/Tribune News Service
