D’Angelo’s eldest son Michael Archer is breaking his silence after the death of his father and shooting down false statements reported in some news media.
Archer, the child of the R&B legend and singer Angie Stone, who died in a car crash earlier this year, took to Instagram to address the news.
“I just sat here watchin my daddy die after feeling like it was the first time he and I were truly building,” Archer wrote on his story while also confirming that D’Angelo was “there when I needed him the most after the passing of momma.”
The 28-year-old – a musician himself under the stage name Swayvo Twain – noted that, “Unfortunately, time ran out” for the singer, who died at 51 after a private battle with pancreatic cancer.
While many searched for details about the late singer’s final days, a false statement attributed to Archer circulated online.
Archer addressed the supposed statement stating, “I know it wasn’t meant maliciously, but I’m not in the right headspace today to make any public statements – and I hadn’t planned to.” He then directed all further inquiries to his manager.
A source told People the Lady singer “was in hospice for two weeks but had been in the hospital for months.”
“His son was there with him and had been with him in the hospital,” the source said. “People are really worried about Mike right now; his mum died a day after his birthday and now six months later he’s burying his dad.”
Archer is the only child of Angie Stone and D’Angelo, who were one of music’s power couples in the 1990s, dating for four years.
In March, Stone unexpectedly died in a car accident in Alabama. Archer wrote a heartfelt tribute to his mother.
“Hey mama, I ain’t want nothing, just wanted to say I love you,” he wrote. “I know you up there enjoying your god body. I hope you got to see grandma and granddaddy. I want you know how proud I am at the person you are. I want you to know how much you inspired me every single day. You never failed me ever ever. You never were a burden to me EVER. If I had to do it all again I wouldn’t change nothing.”
Archer continued, “I hope to one day be as good to my kids as you were to me…..I just wanted you to know that I got it from here, imma be okay… and imma LONG LIVE YOU 4Ever. Love you mama.”
As for D’Angelo, the neo-soul artiste has been mostly out of the spotlight in the past few years. The source told People that “D’Angelo was very eccentric, he had a manager but he wouldn’t work. He was a recluse; he didn’t like going out of the house.”
In addition to Michael Archer, D’Angelo is also survived by his other two children, Imani Archer and Morocco Archer. – New York Daily News/Tribune News Service
