Amid the glitz and glamour on the Star Awards 2025 red carpet on July 6, Singaporean actor Shane Pow opted for a low-cost option.

In his Instagram post on July 7, he wrote: “Took a risk with no plan B when I bought my outfit from Taobao. I’m glad it worked out!”

The video begins with the 34-year-old posing the question: “Would you wear a S$100 Taobao outfit to a red carpet?” He is then seen opening a parcel containing three packages. Set to the Star Awards theme song, the sped-up video shows him trying on his look.

He also includes a clip of himself on the red carpet with fellow Singaporean celebrities Ben Yeo, Jeffrey Xu, Jeremy Chan and Lee Teng, all dressed in black.

At the end of the video, Pow reveals how much his outfit cost. The jacket was S$41.77, the shoes S$28.29 and the pants S$26.61. The grand total: S$96.67 (RM320).

Singapore-based Taiwanese actress-host Kate Pang commented: “A handsome guy will look good in anything he wears.”

Pow was nominated for the BYD Favourite Male Character Award for playing a team member of the Sexual Offence Department in the drama series Unforgivable. The award went to Romeo Tan for Mr Zhou’s Ghost Stories @ Job Haunting III.

Pow was a full-time artiste with Mediacorp before he was convicted of drink driving in 2021.

He currently has three Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes awards. He has been nominated twice for Best Supporting Actor, in 2018 and 2019, but did not win. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
