Merdeka 118 – Malaysia’s tallest building and the second-tallest in the world – makes its Hollywood debut in Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts.

Filmed in August 2024, the movie features British actress Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova leaping from the 678.9m skyscraper, with Kuala Lumpur’s skyline visible in the background.

According to director Jake Schreier, Pugh performed the stunt herself – with no cuts.

“She was so committed and pulled it off perfectly,” he said in a statement.

To celebrate the film’s release, Merdeka 118 will be lit up in a Thunderbolts-themed display every night from now until May 1. The dazzling show will run from 8pm to midnight.

Thunderbolts follows a team of antiheroes, including Yelena, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster and John Walker embark on a dangerous mission which will bring them face to face with their dark pasts.

Other than Pugh, the film also stars Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Lewis Pullman, Geraldine Viswanathan, Chris Bauer, Wendell Pierce, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
