Celebrity friends of Taiwanese star Barbie Hsu are reeling from shock following news of the actress' sudden passing.

Renowned artistes like Jacky Wu and Lin Chi-Ling have paid tribute to the 48-year-old, affectionately known as Big S in the entertainment industry, after her death was announced on Feb 3.

Lin, 50, said: “Whether it is her superb performance on the screen or her sincere attitude towards life, it's very impressive.

"May she rest in peace in another world without worries, and may her family be strong enough to get through this difficult time. We will always remember her beauty, and rest in peace.”

TV host Wu, 62, told a news site he was shocked when he learned of Hsu's passing.

"I have worked with her for many years. Although we are not close friends, I feel that we have been on the same stage for many years. I feel very sad," Wu said.

"I hope she rests in peace. I am grateful to be her sister in this life, to take care of each other and accompany each other. I will always be grateful to her and miss her!" he said, adding that he last saw Hsu on Jan 25 at a wedding banquet.

News of Hsu's death began circulating on Feb 2.

On Feb 3, a statement sent out to Taiwanese media by her family via the manager of her younger sister, TV host Dee Hsu, confirmed Barbie Hsu's death.

The statement read: “Thanks for all the concern. Over the Chinese New Year period, our entire family travelled to Japan for a holiday, and my most beloved, kindest elder sister Barbie caught influenza-related pneumonia and has unfortunately left us.

“I am thankful to be her sister in this life, and grateful that we have taken care of each other and kept each other company all these years. I will always be thankful to her and remember her. Shan (Barbie Hsu’s nickname), rest in peace. We love you always. Together, remember forever.”
