It has been over three decades since Hong Kong actor Bobby Au-yeung last graced Malaysia’s shores for a drama shoot.

After a long absence, he’s finally back in the country to film his new action-comedy, Money Games, slated for a 2025 release.

During a press conference in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday (Aug 27), Au-yeung said the upcoming project will be his first Chinese New Year movie since his acting debut in 1982.

“I have never filmed a CNY movie in Hong Kong. Instead, I gave my first one to Malaysia, aka my lucky place,” the 64-year-old said with a smile.

Au-yeung further disclosed that he nearly suffered a heat stroke on the first day of filming as he was unable to adapt to the temperature difference.

The actor recalled filming at a golf course that day. Although it was sunny, he had chills and showed signs of a heat stroke.

“(Malaysian actor) Jack Lim almost sent me to the hospital. Thankfully, I have been adjusting well to the temperatures over the past few days,” he added.

Despite the incident, the experience of returning to Malaysia far outweighed any negative aspects.

In fact, the actor still finds the warmth and friendliness of the people to be the same from years ago.

“The human touch here is stronger than ever,” he said.

Additionally, Au-yeung is thrilled to work alongside renowned Hong Kong actor Eric Tsang in Money Games.

He described this collaboration as a “dream”, adding: “Eric is my idol. This time, I'm finally getting the chance to work with him. I feel like I can reach a higher level and learn more from him.”

Directed by local filmmaker Matt Lai, Money Games follows Big Boss Zeng (Tsang) and his team of undercover agents as they dismantle online scam operations.

Things take a turn for the worse when the scams hit Hong Kong, leading to betrayals among the team members driven by greed.

To end the illegal activities and seek justice, the characters must remain united and overcome their own temptations.

The movie also stars Hong Kong Cantopop singer Edmond So and a slew of Malaysian talents – including Lim, Choo Hao Ren, Sandra Lim and more.
