Hong Kong actor Shek Sau may be 76 but he still runs, lifts weights and does push ups.

Despite his dedication to fitness, the former TVB star is not exempt from the effects of ageing.

In a recent interview, Shek Sau revealed that he had only 60% of his hearing left.

He discovered his hearing loss two years ago when he sought medical advice due to difficulties in hearing after a performance.

The actor attributed his condition to his prolonged use of headphones and his hobbies – which included playing the drums and guitar.

"I wear headphones and listen to music every day, which affects my eardrums... I regret not listening to my friend's advice 10 years ago," he said.

Shek Sau added that while his hearing has improved after undergoing treatment, he still has to rely on a hearing aid.

The Love Guaranteed (2006) star has also given up on drumming and wears earplugs when playing the saxophone to prevent further hearing loss.

Despite the hurdles, Shek Sau still considers himself lucky.

"I do not need to wear glasses when I read scripts, my teeth are healthy and I can still run fast enough to catch up with my grandson.

"I still go for my daily brisk walks, abstain from sweets and snacks, eat very lightly and take good care of my body," he said.

Association of Specialists in Private Medical Practice of Malaysia president Datuk Dr Balwant Singh Gendeh told The Star in 2022 that hearing loss could occur from listening to loud music through headphones over prolonged periods of time.

Dr Balwant spoke of precautionary measures which could be taken, such as taking a five-minute break for every 30 minutes of use.

“At the same time, users should also set their earphones at a 50% volume and to cut back on listening time to ensure a safe hearing experience,” he said.
