The annual European Film Festival (EUFF) in Malaysia is back to thrill cinephiles in three cities. Apart from Kuala Lumpur and Penang, this year's EUFF makes a comeback to Kuching after a four-year hiatus.

Now in its 24th year, the festival will feature 18 movies from 15 countries across Europe.

The festival will begin in the Klang Valley from Oct 12-22 at GSC Mid Valley Megamall, MyTown and 1 Utama and then move to GSC Gurney Plaza Penang from Oct 26-Nov 1. It will culminate in Kuching at at CityOne Megamall, from Nov 2-5.

The European Union ambassador to Malaysia Michalis Rokas said the EUFF is seen as a cultural institution that connects people from all walks of life.

“It is a platform for Member States and partners within the continent such as Ukraine, Norway and Switzerland to showcase our legacy, passion and expertise in film making to Malaysia and the world.

“Our rich tapestry of cultures, history, philosophy and landscapes are in full display during this event that Malaysia has played host to yearly since 1999," he said at a press event.

The EUFF will open with the Spanish film Goya In Bordeaux. Directed by Carlos Saura, the film focuses on Goya’s evolution as a man, his work and private obsessions and is set in the final months before his death.

Meanwhile Italy's contribution to the film festival is the Parents Vs Influencers for its commentary on modern day teen-raising.

“The film deals with the struggles of a middle-aged philosophy professor who grapples with his daughter’s social media obsession and the differences between his generation and hers," Clara Cualbu, deputy head of Mission for Italy said.

Goya In Bordeux and Parents Vs Influencers are among the 11 titles that would be screened for free.

Others include The Restless (Belgium), Neither With You (Hungary), 100 Days Of Ulysses (Ireland), We Still Talk (Italy), The Brothers (Netherlands), Operation Artic (Norway), Ramona (Spain), Imad Childhood (Sweden) and Mr Jones (Ukraine).

Moviegoers can redeem the free tickets starting at noon on Oct 9. It will be packaged with a RM4 mineral water purchase per ticket, via e-payment on the GSC website and app or the ticketing kiosks at the participating cinemas.

Tickets for the other seven movies are priced at RM10.

The EUFF is organised by the Delegation of the European Union to Malaysia, in collaboration with embassies and cultural institutions of EU Member States as well as Ukraine, Switzerland and Norway.
