Malaysian animation studio Monsta released its official trailer for its upcoming film Mechamato Movie on Jan 1.
As of today, the trailer has already clocked over 1.2 million views on its official YouTube channel, sparking interests among Malaysians and Indonesians.
On Monday (Jan 4), the studio behind the successful franchise BoBoiBoy, released another surprise. It said in a statement that the main superhero character in Mechamato, a young boy named Amato, is actually BoBoiBoy's father.
This cross reference was first hinted at during the post-credit scene at the end of BoBoiBoy Movie 2. Both projects fall under the Power Sphera Universe, said Monsta,
Mechamato is dubbed as the biggest project from Monsta this year. Besides the film, the studio is also releasing a series centring on these characters.
According to Monsta, the series will be shown on more than 20 countries in the Asia-Pacific region through the Cartoon Network channel including Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
The production of Mechamato Movie is almost finished, and it will be released nationwide when "the market conditions recover and cinemas fully reopen".
The film sees Amato as an ordinary schoolboy in the city of Kota Hilir. One day, he chances upon a spaceship and meets MechaBot, an alien being with the ability to mechanise any object.
Joining forces, Amato and MechaBot – aka Mechamato – take down the bad guys that threaten Kota Hilir.
Judging by the trailer, Mechamato Movie boasts of some clever ideas and impressive animation.
"The Mechamato film promises an experience that will surely be able to entertain the whole family," added Monsta.
