Review: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Cue the big sunny musical number led by Rebecca (Rachel Bloom) about her move being a fresh start and nothing to do with her obsession with Josh Chan. Photos: Star World

Emerging in the wake of a slew of reality singing competitions and music-centric critical darlings such as Glee, Nashville and Empire is new kid on the block Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. However, unlike the three TV shows mentioned above, the characters here have no aspirations to be on Broadway, release albums, build a music empire or become superstars.

The protagonist here is a successful lawyer with an overactive imagination who gets the sudden urge to burst into song especially when she is dealing with personal issues. Is this Ally McBeal 2.0? Well, not quite. There have been no “dancing baby” sightings so far, thank goodness, since that is so last century.
