In the extravagant £14mil (RM78.6mil) British series Indian Summers, Malaysian singer Ash Nair and veteran local actor Mano Maniam are among the cast. The 10-episode season was shot in Penang last year, though the story is set in the Himalayan foothills of Shimla, India – where the British ruling elite once spent their summer months. It's 1932 and India is experiencing the birth pangs of independence.
“It’s getting hot. People are wanting independence and it’s about how the British are politically trying to deal with that uprising,” said Ash on the premise of the show. “It’s a slow burn, a real British drama, like Jewel In The Crown, that really focuses on the characters and gives viewers a snapshot of how people lived then, shedding light on the social divide between the upper and lower classes.”
