Step into a world of pure imagination as Broadway musical Charlie And The Chocolate Factory heads to Malaysia for the first time this December.
Adapted from British writer Roald Dahl’s classic 1964 children’s novel, the production will stop at the newly opened Jeffrey Cheah Performing Arts Centre (JCPAC) in Sunway Square, Bandar Sunway, Selangor, from Dec 22 to Jan 10, 2027, as part of an extensive Asian tour.
Built for family fun, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory joins the opening season at JCPAC’s 1,200-seat Grand Theatre, with early-bird tickets now on sale.
Presented by Broadway International Group and Broadway Asia Company, the show offers Malaysians a year-end highlight, particularly as international musicals are rarely staged here.
The Broadway production premiered in 2017 and ran for over 300 performances, followed by a four-year North American tour. The show was also staged on London’s West End, where it received two Olivier Awards for Best Costume Design and Best Lighting Design.
Let the chocolate flow
In Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, we follow young Charlie Bucket on his golden-ticket adventure into the mysterious and magical world of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. From chocolate rivers to nut-sorting squirrels and mischievous Oompa-Loompas, the musical dazzles with eye-popping visuals, larger-than-life characters, immersive delight for the audience and toe-tapping music.
The musical features iconic songs from the classic 1971 film, including Pure Imagination, The Candy Man and I’ve Got A Golden Ticket, along with original music by Grammy and Tony Award winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Mary Poppins Returns).
“Roald Dahl’s Charlie And The Chocolate Factory is a dazzling fantasy for everyone from everywhere. Featuring cutting-edge special effects and hologauze 3D technology, we are so excited to share the breathtaking world of this beloved Broadway musical about the power of imagination and the art of invention with Malaysian audiences in this spectacular new immersive production from an all-Broadway creative team,” said Simone Genatt and Marc Routh, producers and co-owners of Broadway International Group and Broadway Asia in a joint statement.
Joining the Broadway team is Las Vegas magic and illusion designer Tim Clothier, who has been tasked with transforming Willy Wonka’s fantastical factory into a world where the impossible feels possible.
Runtime is 150 minutes, including a 20-minute intermission.
