Step into digital worlds beyond your senses and imagination at REXKL’s new immersive art gallery REXPERIENCE (RXP.KL), which opens to the public on Sept 20.

Set in a former cinema hall where moviegoers used to spend hours watching the big screen, RXP.KL reimagines the legacy of the Rex cinema space by bringing in a new, cutting-edge digital art experience.

“At RXP.KL, we’re redefining what an art gallery can be – it’s a chance to step into a world where technology and creativity meet in amazing ways,” says Sebastien Jurkowski, CEO and creative director of RXP.KL.

“Our vision is to create exhibitions that spark discovery and inspiration among art lovers, young innovators and travellers in search of genuine creative, cultural and shared experiences,” he adds.

In its inaugural (ticketed) exhibition, Other World, visitors will be transported to stunningly crafted alternate realities, from cosmic to natural and urban to abstract. The one-hour show features three main works:

Foreign Nature by Julius Horsthuis and Ben Lukas Boysen is an enchanting journey into the realm of mathematical landscapes that reveal nature’s intricate beauty through captivating fractals. These mesmerising fractals transcend mere creation, inviting you to wonder in new dimensions and discover nature’s mathematical marvels.

Yume by Fahmi Hosnan and Ashish Khilnani brings iconic Japanese artworks to life. Visitors can view traditional masterpieces from a fresh perspective through projection and motion, forging a connection between past and present. From the delicate winter scenery of Snow At Zojoji Temple to Hokusai’s famed The Great Wave Off Kanagawa, experience how the boundaries of artistic expression can be redefined.

Elsewhere, the atmospheric Annihilation by Colas Fiszman and Jonas Margraf paints a vivid picture of humanity’s complex relationship with technology through dance, technology and music.

The live performance show uses motion capture technology to capture a dancer’s movements, projecting them onto the screen in real-time while intricate 3D laser scans from Belgian and Malaysian landscapes compose spellbinding digital vistas.

Enhanced by Jonas Margraf’s 360° spatial soundtrack, the auditory adventure adds another dimension to the experience.

In December 2021, REXKL hosted the month-long Sensorium Of Inversion/Immersion (SENSORii), a multimedia art spectacle that will featured light projection artworks by several Malaysian new media artists.

Other World is showing at REXKL, Jalan Sultan, Kuala Lumpur from Sept 20 to Jan 20. The show runs every hour daily from 10am to 10pm. More info here.
