PENTAS SENI MERDEKA: MUZIK DAN TARIAN BORNEO MALAYSIA

Venue: Jalan Raja, Kuala Lumpur

Date: Sept 10, 8.30pm

Tomorrow’s latest edition of Pentas Seni Merdeka (at the front of Dataran Merdeka and Sultan Abdul Samad building) will see Alena Murang, an award-winning Sarawakian musician, artist and storyteller, on stage with the Muzik Dan Tarian Borneo Malaysia showcase.

With her Kanid Studio in tow, the masses will be in for a culture-inspired street party and traditional dance treat.

A “Datun Julud” workshop (hornbill dance) is part of the Pentas Seni Merdeka programme. In the heart of KL tomorrow, you can celebrate this Orang Ulu traditional women’s dance that is popular among the Kenyah tribe of Sarawak.

A magunatip workshop, which is known as “bamboo dance” (one of the most popular traditional dances of Sabah), is also in tomorrow’s programme. Here’s a chance to learn about this energetic dance associated with Sabah’s Murut people.

Pentas Seni Merdeka, a free monthly public arts initiative by Think City and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), made its debut in along Jalan Raja in KL in July.

DBKL’s Cultural Artistes and Combo is also a regular feature at these jubilant outdoor events, which have added new life to downtown KL’s cultural scene.

FREEDOMFILMFESTIVAL 2002

Venue: PJ Live Arts Theatre, Jaya One, Petaling Jaya

Date: Sept 9-17

The FreedomFilmFest 2022 is swinging back as an on-site event, starting today at PJ Live Arts Theatre.

This year’s edition aims to make sense of the pandemic with the theme of “Pandemik Dua Darjat” (Pandemic Of Inequality), featuring a series of programmes that highlight the impact of the pandemic and lived experiences in the last two years.

You’ll need to block out time in your diary. The (ticketed) festival is set to be a busy one with award-winning international documentaries, to student films from Malaysia and Singapore, to discussions on impact of film featuring local filmmakers and guest speakers from FreedomFilmFest Singapore and Doc Society.

Tonight’s opening film, In The Same Breath (2021), recounts the experiences of people on the ground in the earliest days of the pandemic and the way two countries dealt with its initial spread, from the first days of the outbreak in Wuhan, China to its rampage across the United States.

Over the next few days, the festival will be presenting 30 film screenings, and a diverse line-up of programmes, including masterclasses, post-screening discussions, workshops and Freedom Talks.

FreedomFilmFest is an annual human rights documentary film festival organised by the Freedom Film Network, Malaysia.

JEROME KUGAN'S 'RESIST' ART EXHIBITION

Venue: The Back Room, Zhongshan building, KL

Date: Sept 10-Oct 2

It is not exactly the art scene’s version of a “photo dump”, but Sabahan artist-writer Jerome Kugan has been active and busy in putting together a thought-provoking exhibition series derived from five years worth of solo work in Kota Kinabalu.

Kugan is making a swift return to the gallery circuit with Resist, part two of this solo series. The first part Hurt Need Undo Live showed at The Back Room in KL last month.

This new show opens tomorrow at the same gallery. It features Kugan’s drawings and paintings on paper, card, and HIV medication packaging alongside some of the works from the first exhibition.

Resist also has the addition of a new exhibition design by fellow artist Sharon Chin, which gives visitors a completely new experience of the artworks.
