VIRTUAL MUSIC: FRAGMEN: TRADISI KEJUT SAHUR
Date and Time: Unlimited
Did you know that there’s an 80-year old community tradition in Kampung Bukit Piatu in Melaka where a group of drummers go around the neighbourhood area, waking people up for sahur during Ramadan month?
This short video by the Malaysian National Film Development Corporation (Finas) gives viewers a glimpse of this unique Ramadan tradition called "Ketuk Ketuk Kejut Sahur". Starting at 3am during the fasting month, a group of Bukit Piatu villagers - young and old - will walk from the main road and through the back lanes (for about 2km) to get the entire kampung (about 2,000 residents) to wake up at dawn for sahur.
The mood is festive and loud on the dark streets, with Ramadan drummers banging the gendang silat and kompang to make a din. The serunai and kerincing are also added to the traditional instrument list. Hari Raya songs are also sung by the joyous group closer to the big day, as the entire Kampung Bukit Piatu comes together as a vibrant and lively community.
There also different Ramadan traditions featured in this Finas festive series.
Fragmen: Tradisi Kejut Sahur and videos (in Bahasa Malaysia) can be streamed for free via the Finas YouTube channel.

VIRTUAL ART: IN CONVERSATION WITH ABDULLAH JONES
Date and Time: Unlimited
For those who missed Mujarad Naga Tasek Chini, the third solo exhibition by local artist and writer Abdullah Jones at the G13 Gallery recently, here's a chance to catch up with the painter through the gallery's video series.
For this series of works, which is experimental in nature, Abdullah Jones mentions being is inspired by the legend of Tasik Chini (in Pahang). It also focuses on a mythical creature called Naga (dragon) from the lake.
Tasik Chini is the second largest natural lake in Malaysia. It was once known as a floating garden with thousands of white and pink lotus flowers covering its surface. Unfortunately, pollution caused by uncontrolled logging, mining and farming activities has destroyed this natural beauty. Through the new artworks, Abdullah Jones aims to bring out awareness about the environment and climate concerns at Tasik Chini by reinterpreting the cautionary folk tales and stories found in that area.
In this insightful conversation (in Bahasa Malaysia), Abdullah Jones also shares about the new elements - oil paint and spray paint - used in this exhibition.
