The inaugural Art Includes Festival 2019 in Kuala Lumpur opens at the Ruang by Think City venue on Sept 23.

The week-long festival showcases disability arts and culture, with a broad range of works from differently abled artists, photographers, musicians, cartoonists, dancers and others.

With the theme “Celebrating Diversities”, the festival, which runs with series of programmes from Sept 23-29, is also being held in conjunction with the United Nations’ Global Day of Action.

Here are five things to check out:

This programme features radio and TV personality Patrick Teoh (who contracted polio as a child), Singaporean pianist Dr Azariah Tan, who is almost deaf, blind photographer Jamaliah Mohd Yasin, autistic artist Wan Jamila Wan Shaiful Bahri (aka artjamila) and blind Nepalese dancer/choreographer Shristi K.C.

We live in a world where we are constantly bombarded with images. What if you are able to enjoy great music but in total darkness, allowing your other senses to awaken? Sit back and relax as six professional soloists and bands from Malaysia and Singapore take you on a journey of sounds. Look out for KL-based WVC Malaysian Jazz Ensemble, heavy rock outfit Arvan, Sabahan pop artist Rozella, and Singaporeans - singer Joie, comedian/entertainer Hossan Leong and fusion band Flame Of The Forest. The concert is in collaboration with the Singapore Causeway Exchange.

Fine Dining In The Dark

Here’s a chance to awaken your other senses as you enjoy a special meal designed by blind Vietnamese-American chef Christine Ha, who won the competitive cooking TV show series MasterChef title in 2012. While Ha herself will not be present during the dining experience, her recipe book will be the guiding the chefs here for this fine dining offering in the dark.

Railey’s Rain - Sensory Theatre

Where: Ruang by Think City

When: Sept 28 and 29

This sensory theatre production by Singapore’s Republic Polytechnic’s School of Technology for the Arts is a two-part performance. It starts off with a workshop, where children will get to make their own props, which they will get to bring into the show. The workshop runs for 30 minutes and the show for 45 minutes. The objective of this sensory theatre production is to provide children with special needs an opportunity to attend a theatre production. Each session takes in between 12 and 15 children, depending on their functioning level.
