The Kaka Arts Market will once again be throwing its doors open this weekend at KongsiKL, Jalan Klang Lama in Kuala Lumpur.

The arts market, organised by Inxo Arts and Culture Foundation, in collaboration with KongsiKL and Inxo Arts Fund Programme, will feature three segments: the art market proper where 30 artists and collectives will have their works on display, a series of workshops curated by KongsiKL, and an Inxo Arts Fund Exhibition that will showcase the creativity of 13 young artists.

“Kaka Arts Market provides a platform for local artists who are passionate in design, handmade art and back-to-nature crafts. We encourage creativity, originality, and hope that this will be a one-stop space where the public can see, learn, play and buy art,” says Dikson Phang, project executive of Inxo Arts and Culture (L) Foundation.

The Kaka Arts Market, founded in 2010, will be utilising KongsiKL’s vast floor space that is often used for experimental arts projects and performances. It is the first Kaka Arts Market at the re-purposed warehouse venue.

Some of the homegrown participants include Coralinestamps, Bell Handmade House, Kasy Craft, Offwork Creation, Whimsery x Chalk and Coal, Step Design, Manager’s Break Time, I M Sashimii, Silo Ceramic Art, Vistory, Imagination to Creativity, Beeble Theory and Little Eden Succulents.

Gerimis: First Preview exhibition, which features orang asal narratives and artists, is also part of the market. This independent initiative features artists like Jefree Salim, Leny Maknoh, Ramlan Koyok, Ronnie Bahari, Shaq Koyok and Vicky Eluq.

The theme for this edition of Kaka Arts Market is “Gather 2 Gether”, a reference to gathering art lovers under one roof.

According to Phang, the “2” is a nod to the arts platform (Kaka Arts Market) and culture platform (KongsiKL) working together.

For those interested in doing something with your hands, you just might find something of interest at the workshop series curated by KongsiKL. If you – or your children – have always wanted to try your hand at paper dyeing, jewellery making, beading, woodwork, concrete casting or felting projects, here is your chance. The workshops are conducted by makers and DIYers, and fees are RM30 and below.

“Children will be presented with the opportunity to create something out of the box at these workshops, though of course parents are welcome to join in the fun too! For art engagement with the younger generation, the Inxo Arts Fund Exhibition is a good place to visit to get to know how young artists pursue their artistic projects,” adds Phang.

Kaka Arts Market is at KongsiKL, Gudang Yee Seng 2, Jalan Klang Lama, Kuala Lumpur on Sat Dec 8 and Sun Dec 9 (2pm-9pm). Free admission. FB: Kaka Arts Market.
