Italian delights by the seaside

The Mixed Grill Platter offers a bounty of briny morsels, perfect for a meal on the beach.

AFTER months of having the same dishes or takeaways at home, you might find yourself yearning for a change of scenery and flavours.

And if a leisurely meal on the beach is what comes to mind, then Sigi’s Bar and Grill in Shangri-La Golden Sands, Penang, is the place to be.

The seaside eatery reopened for dine-ins with an updated menu recently. Be it a balmy afternoon or starry night, its Italian treats are sure to whet the appetite.

New items include the Mixed Grill Platter, a bountiful cache of baby lobster, tiger prawns, scallops, mussels, salmon and squid accompanied by roasted potatoes and grilled vegetables.

Hearty enough for two or even three persons, it also comes with a trio of dips – lemon garlic butter; lemon, chili and coriander; as well as a nam jim-based Romesco sauce.

Also debuting is the Lamb Shank di Agnello. Slow braised for several hours, its tender meat pairs well with a robust tomato sauce and mashed potato. Zucchini and carrot ‘spaghetti’ complete the dish.

Sigi’s thin-crust pizzas have long been crowd favourites. A new vegetarian option is now available - the Pizza D’Verdo with onion, black olives, bell peppers, pineapple, artichokes and truffle oil.

Signature ones like The Godfather, Salmone Affumicato and Al Pepperoni are still available, as are the antipasto, soups and surf and turf grilled items.

Recommended pasta dishes include the Spinach Ricotta Ravioli and Squid Ink Pasta with clams and prawns. Be sure to make room for desserts.

The Torte di Formaggio al Forno is a cheesy treat that will appeal to many, while the Chocolate Lava Gateau oozes rich cocoa goodness. The Sigi’s Panna Cotta and Not Your Regular Tiramisu are worth trying too.

Readers of The Star are in for a special treat. Bring this Gourmet Guide article along when you visit Sigi’s to redeem one complimentary Strawberry Ocean mocktail (containing orange juice, coconut cream and strawberry puree).

Dining hours are 3pm to 11pm daily. All relevant health and safety measures are in place so guests can dine with peace of mind.

Due to the reduction in seating capacity, reservations are advised for peak periods. Call 04-886 1911.
