Hong Leong Bank expands cross-border QR payments with Alipay+

Hong Leong Bank group managing director and CEO Kevin Lam.

KUALA LUMPUR: Hong Leong Bank Bhd (HLB) has added Alipay+ to its cross-border payment network through Payments Network Malaysia (PayNet), allowing customers to make overseas QR payments using the HLB Connect app.

In a statement, the bank said the integration builds on PayNet's existing cross-border QR payment linkages with Singapore's NETS, Thailand's PromptPay, Indonesia's QRIS and Cambodia's Bakong.

Alipay+ payments are processed instantly, with funds deducted directly from customers' ringgit bank accounts.

The addition complements HLB's existing connectivity with UnionPay International and Weixin Pay, which provides access to more than 120 million QR-enabled merchants across China, Hong Kong, Macau and Thailand.

HLB said customers can make cross-border QR payments through HLB Connect without downloading additional payment applications or topping up separate e-wallets.

Depending on the participating merchant and payment network, customers can either scan a merchant's QR code or present their HLB QR Pay code for scanning.

The bank also offers other overseas payment options, including linking eligible HLB cards to Weixin Pay and using Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay.

HLB group managing director and chief executive officer Kevin Lam said the integration would provide customers with more payment options when travelling overseas.

"Bringing these networks together gives them more places to pay through HLB Connect, alongside the cards and other payment options they already use," he said.

HLB noted that payment acceptance, transaction methods, funding options and availability vary according to the network and market.
