KUALA LUMPUR: The FBM KLCI rebounded on Wednesday, the last trading day of Sept 2026 after the previous day’s sharp selloff, although declining stocks continued to outnumber gainers across Bursa Malaysia.
Caution appeared to persist on equities amid a mixed backdrop on the broader Asian markets with rising international bond yields, particularly US 10-year Treasury yields.
US 10-year Treasuries rose to its highest level since 2002 on Wednesday's trade in the US. At the time of writing it last traded at 5.224%.
The FBM KLCI rose 7.21 points, or 0.44%, to 1,651.17, recovering part of Tuesday’s 26.06-point loss. It had gained 10.18 points at midday before paring its advance.
Market breadth remained negative, with 703 losers against 413 gainers. Another 572 counters were unchanged and 1,167 untraded. A total of 3.63 billion shares worth RM3.63bil changed hands.
Buying in selected heavyweights helped lift the index. Tenaga Nasional Bhd
rising 1.89% to RM12.96, Gamuda Bhd
gaining 4% to RM5.18 and Petronas Gas Bhd
adding 1.28% to RM17.40: they were among the top gainers.
Gamuda also featured among the most active stocks following its FY2026 results release, which showed record net profit of RM1.05bil and a construction order book of RM61bil.
Nestlé (Malaysia) Bhd and United Plantations Bhd
were among the other leading gainers by value. Topping the losers, Hengyuan Refining Company Bhd
lost 18% to RM3.56, Malaysian Pacific Industries
Bhd declined 1% to RM40.40, Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd
lost 1.33% to RM22.20 and Genting Plantations Bhd
fell 4.16% to RM5.53.
Hengyuan had fallen sharply by midday, prompting Bursa Malaysia to suspend intraday short selling of its shares for the rest of the session.
Zetrix AI Bhd, V.S. Industry Bhd
, Gamuda and JAKS Resources Bhd
were among the most actively traded counters.
The Bursa Malaysia Energy index was the biggest laggard on the local bourse falling by 2.65% today.
The FBM KLCI lost 76.32 points for the month of Sept.
Regional markets were mixed on Wednesday's trade. Japan’s Nikkei 225 jumped 1.9% to 66,753.72 and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.9% to 8,789.30, while South Korea’s Kospi fell 0.5% to 6,838.04. Wall Street had ended lower on Tuesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipping 0.3%.
