PETALING JAYA: OGX Group Bhd is tapping growing demand for battery energy storage systems (Bess) as businesses and homeowners seek greater control over electricity costs amid changes in Malaysia’s power tariff landscape.

The information and technology infrastructure solutions specialist announced its entry into the renewable energy or RE industry through wholly owned subsidiary, OGX Green Tech Sdn Bhd.

According to OGX Green Tech solutions director Matthew William Teng: “Both commercial and industrial (C&I) users in the C&I market, particularly factory owners, have seen maximum demand charges increase by up to 162%.

“Before the new tariff structure took effect in July 2025, the maximum demand charge stood at RM37. Under the new time-of-use tariff structure, the charge has since increased to RM97.06, comprising a capacity charge of RM30.19 and a network charge of RM66.87, representing a 162% increase in maximum demand costs.

“The market, therefore, is turning to peak-demand management solutions using solar and Bess to further reduce that maximum demand,” he explained at the signing ceremony to officiate a partnership between OGX Green Tech and China-based energy storage and inverter specialist Zhejiang Hyxi Technology Co Ltd (HYXI).

OGX Green Tech was appointed by HYXI as its authorised distributor in Malaysia.

Teng noted Malaysian homeowners have increasingly turned to solar for self consumption (Selco) and battery systems to reduce their reliance on the grid, amid changing electricity rates and policies.

For local residents, this means greater protection from rate fluctuations and policy changes, round-the-clock savings, greater control over their electricity use, and a potentially faster return on investment.

“The export model keeps you reliant on the grid, subject to changes in policy and electricity costs.

“Meanwhile, Selco, together with battery storage, gives you greater control over your energy consumption, long-term power costs and potentially a faster payback period,” Teng explained.

The group noted in its statement that OGX Green Tech will focus on distributing Bess, inverters and batteries to C&I and residential customers in Malaysia.

OGX executive and managing director Tan Suan Loong said: “The appointment by HYXI brings together its technology and product expertise in energy storage solutions with OGX’s local market access, distribution capabilities and systems integration experience.

“This combination provides us with a strong platform to establish and scale our presence in the energy storage segment as a new and complementary growth vertical for OGX.

“We are, therefore, well positioned to address this demand by combining proven energy storage solutions with OGX’s existing customer relationships, market reach and systems integration capabilities.”

Tan added that this new business can broaden OGX’s revenue base and position it to participate in the long-term growth of Malaysia’s energy transition.

OGX Green Tech also intends to tap into the demand for energy storage solutions within Malaysia’s rapidly expanding data centre industry, which seeks cleaner and more resilient alternatives to conventional diesel backup generators to support the surge in artificial intelligence, cloud computing and data-intensive workloads.
