NEW YORK: Spider-Man: Brand New Day registers Hollywood’s largest opening weekend in history, with fans flocking to theaters to beat the summer heat and see the latest film starring Tom Holland as a superhero with arachnid-like powers.

The picture took in US$360mil in the US and Canadian theaters over the weekend, according to revised estimates released on Monday.

That’s more than double this year’s previous biggest debut, April’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Distributed by Sony Pictures Entertainment and produced in partnership with Walt Disney Co’s Marvel Studios, Brand New Day topped Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame to seize the crown for biggest opening weekend ever.

That 2019 picture debuted to US$357.1mil domestically and went on to gross US$2.8bil at the global box office.

The new Spider-Man film took in an additional US$572mil in theaters internationally, setting all-time opening records in markets that included France, India and Brazil. — Bloomberg
