Inokom stays ahead of the curve by building on global automakers’ trust

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s automotive assembly capabilities have been further strengthened by Inokom Corp Sdn Bhd, whose contract assembly operations have earned the trust of leading global automotive brands through consistently high manufacturing standards.

The company currently operates its state-of-the-art facility in Kulim, Kedah, spanning body shops, paint shops, assembly and centralised warehouses.

The group has planned a new advanced painting facility, which is expected to strengthen its operational capacity.

Inokom produces vehicles for global automotive brands BMW, MINI, Porsche, Mazda, Hyundai and Chery.

According to the group, production volumes have increased to more than 31,800 units last year from 20,500 units in 2021.

“Over this period, Inokom has exported more than 24,500 units to regional markets, establishing it as one of Malaysia’s largest automotive exporters,” it noted.

The group is also a strong component of Sime Darby Bhd’s motor business.

Sime Darby group chief executive officer Datuk Jeffri Salim Davidson testified to Inokom’s capabilities, stating the close alignment with high-value, homegrown industrial strength that the national GEAR-uP agenda strives to sustain.

“Inokom is a testament to what Malaysian industry is capable of achieving. It continues to uphold the trust of world-leading automotive marques,” he said.

Inokom began its partnership with Hyundai as early as 1993, while Mazda launched its first locally assembled Mazda 3 in 2011, making Inokom the only completely knocked down assembly plant in the Asean region at the time.

In 2021, Porsche chose Inokom as its first assembly facility outside of Europe, and local assembly was expanded two years ago to include exports to Thailand.

“Chery’s arrival in 2023 as an assembly partner further broadened Inokom’s portfolio. This marked a significant step as the Chinese automaker extends its South-East Asian footprint with both internal combustion and electrified offerings.”

Meanwhile, beyond its assembly facilities, Inokom also supports Malaysia’s automotive supply chain through 370 local vendors including bumiputra enterprises.

Jeffri Salim said the industry landscape has been changing rapidly, and Sime Darby is committed to ensuring that Inokom stays ahead of the curve.
