BANGKOK: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) received recognition from the Airports Council International (ACI) at the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) Awards ceremony, with Penang International Airport and Kuching International Airport attaining ACA Level 1 accreditation for their carbon management efforts.

The accreditation recognises airports that have established a verified carbon footprint and demonstrated commitment towards active carbon management and reporting.

The latest recognition follows earlier ACA Level 1 accreditations secured by Langkawi International Airport and Kota Kinabalu International Airport, while Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) currently holds ACA Level 3 accreditation.

The achievements reflect MAHB’s ongoing sustainability and decarbonisation initiatives across its airport network, including energy efficiency measures and continuous carbon emissions monitoring.

The award was accepted by Malaysia Airports Sdn Bhd (MASB) chief operating officer Kamaruzzaman Razali during the ACI Asia-Pacific and Middle East Regional Assembly, Conference and Exhibition.

Held on May 12-14, the three-day conference gathered about 500 aviation industry leaders, policymakers, airport operators and stakeholders from across the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions to discuss key issues shaping the future of aviation, including sustainability, airport development and operational resilience.

According to MAHB, the recognition reflects its continued efforts to reduce carbon emissions across airport operations while advancing long-term sustainability initiatives aligned with global aviation targets and ACI carbon accreditation requirements.

"The recognition underscores MAHB’s strong governance and long-term sustainability roadmap in supporting Malaysia’s low-carbon aspirations, while reinforcing its position as a regional leader in sustainable airport operations,” the airport operator said.

The ACA programme is a globally recognised initiative by ACI that assesses and recognises airport efforts in carbon management and emissions reduction.

MAHB said the recognition also reinforces its environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitments towards achieving net-zero aspirations while balancing airport growth with environmental responsibility.

Among the key initiatives undertaken by the airport operator is the deployment of solar photovoltaic systems at the Penang International Airport to reduce reliance on conventional energy sources and lower operational carbon emissions.

MAHB has also implemented various energy efficiency measures throughout its airport network, including the replacement of conventional lighting systems with energy-efficient light-emitting diode (LED) lighting.

Additionally, the group said it continuously monitors and reports greenhouse gas emissions across airport operations as part of its commitment to improving environmental performance and strengthening transparency in sustainability reporting.

To further advance its long-term sustainability agenda, MAHB has developed a comprehensive Decarbonisation Roadmap aimed at guiding its carbon reduction strategy and supporting Malaysia’s broader low-carbon development goals.

The roadmap outlines measures to improve operational efficiency, optimise energy consumption and accelerate the adoption of cleaner and more sustainable technologies across airports under its management.

MAHB said the recognition demonstrates the Malaysian aviation sector’s commitment towards sustainable and resilient airport development amid growing global focus on climate action and environmental sustainability.

It added that airports worldwide are increasingly adopting carbon management strategies and investing in green technologies as the aviation industry works towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions in the coming decades.

"The achievement reflects the collective efforts of our employees, partners and stakeholders in supporting MAHB’s sustainability agenda and commitment towards responsible airport operations,” it said.
