ADFIM advises customers to seek DFI support early amid uncertainties

PETALING JAYA: Recognising that customers may be facing increased financial strain during these global uncertainties, the Association of Development Finance Institutions of Malaysia (ADFIM) encouraged those experiencing difficulties to engage with their respective development financial institutions (DFIs) and entrepreneur development organisations (EDOs) as early as possible.

The association, in a statement, noted that early and open communication is critical in enabling financial institutions to better understand individual circumstances and tailor appropriate support measures.

“This allows DFIs and EDOs to identify solutions that are fair, practical and responsive to customers’ needs,” it said.

ADFIM’s call comes against a backdrop of heightened global uncertainty, including recent geopolitical developments in the Middle East, which have contributed to increased economic volatility.

It acknowledged that such conditions can create real pressures for businesses, households and communities.

In this environment, DFIs and EDOs continue to play a vital countercyclical role by ensuring access to financing remains available, especially for strategic sectors, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and underserved segments of the economy.

To assist affected customers, ADFIM said available support measures may include flexible repayment arrangements, restructuring of financing facilities and targeted advisory services.

These initiatives are aimed at easing short-term financial burdens while safeguarding long-term business viability, in line with the developmental mandate of DFIs and EDOs.

At the same time, ADFIM reassured stakeholders that its member institutions remain well-capitalised and operates within sound and prudent risk management frameworks.

The association added DFIs and EDOs will continue to work closely with the government, regulators and key stakeholders to ensure coordinated and effective delivery of assistance.

“These collective efforts support Malaysia’s broader goal of fostering inclusive, sustainable and resilient economic growth,” it said.

ADFIM also underscored the importance of clear and compassionate communication during uncertain times, adding it will strengthen engagement with both federal and state stakeholders to ensure support measures are effectively conveyed and reach the communities that need them most.

It reiterated its call for customers facing financial challenges to reach out proactively, emphasising the role of DFIs and EDOs as partners in navigating ongoing economic headwinds.
