JAKARTA: PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) has begun the construction of a one trillion rupiah gas pipeline linking the West Natuna Transportation System to Pemping Island, Batam.

The pipeline is designed to reorient gas supplies toward domestic consumption and provide electricity for the rapidly growing industrial hub.

PLN EPI president director Rakhmad Dewanto said the pipeline was built to provide for Batam’s escalating energy demand.

“Batam’s future electricity demand will continue to increase and will be met primarily with gas.

“While most associated gas is currently exported to Singapore, this pipeline will prioritise channeling supply toward meeting Batam’s domestic needs,” Rakhmad said, as reported by Bisnis.com.

The project would be executed in several phases. The initial stage targeted a distribution capacity of approximately 33 million standard cb ft per day, which would later be increased to 111 billion British thermal units per day under an 11-year supply commitment.

“The entire gas volume will be allocated 100% for domestic needs. This will guarantee Batam’s energy supply for at least the next 10 years,” Rakhmad added. — The Jakarta Post/ANN
