KUALA LUMPUR: KPJ Healthcare Bhd
has appointed Professor Datuk Dr Hanafiah Harunarashid as its new chief medical director (CMD), reinforcing the healthcare group's system-wide focus on clinical governance, patient safety and consistent standards of care across its hospital network.
According to the group's statement, Hanafiah will oversee clinical governance alignment, quality systems and clinician engagement across KPJ Healthcare, supporting system-wide standards as well as strengthening trust, accountability and long-term sustainability.
Hanafiah, who succeeds Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Lokman Saim at KPJ Healthcare, is a Professor of Vascular Surgery at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Pro Vice-Chancellor.
He holds senior leadership roles within the Malaysian medical fraternity, including serving as Master of the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia and Council Member of the Malaysian Medical Council.
His past leadership roles include President of the College of Surgeons, Academy of Medicine Malaysia, President of the Asian Surgical Association and International Surgical Adviser to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Previously, as Director of Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz, he led major patient safety and quality improvement initiatives and guided the hospital through key institutional reforms. Under his leadership, the hospital became the first teaching hospital in Malaysia to achieve accreditation by the Malaysian Society for Quality in Health (“MSQH”).
