KUALA LUMPUR: Car owners with vehicles aged 20 years or older can receive incentives of up to RM4,000 to trade in and scrap their cars for a new Proton model, under the carmaker’s participation in the Malaysian government’s Matching Grant Programme for the replacement of old vehicles.

In a statement, Proton said all Proton models qualify for the offer with Proton Saga and Proton e.MAS 5 buyers to receive an incentive of up to RM1,000.

Other models offered by the company include the new Proton X50 and Proton X70 as well as the Proton e.MAS 7 will receive an incentive valued at RM2,000.

Combined with the matching grant, it means the maximum amount of incentive customers can receive are RM2,000 and RM4,000, respectively.

Proton said the initiative aligns with the government’s push to phase out older, less safe and less efficient vehicles, while supporting its growth targets for 2026, when the company aims to reach 200,000 units in sales.

Chief executive officer Dr Li Chunrong said PROTON is partnering the Malaysian government’s Matching Grant Programme for the Replacement of Old Vehicles to offer customers greater value.

He added that the initiative encourages the responsible replacement of old, unroadworthy cars, improves road safety and supports the transition towards cleaner and more efficient mobility.

“The incentive offered by Proton is an extension of the Proton Xchange Programme launched in May 2025. Offering up to RM2,000 in over trade for customers who scrapped their old vehicles for a new Proton model, 4,344 transactions were made, resulting in approximately RM8.68mil being given out towards the purchase of a new car by the end of 2025,” Li said.
