Cape EMS in deal to assemble Bess in Malaysia

PETALING JAYA: Cape EMS Bhd is set to begin local assembly of a China firm’s battery energy storage systems (Bess), with a focus on capturing opportunities in the Asean market.

In a statement, Cape EMS announced the signing of a strategic cooperation agreement with Shanghai Sermatec Energy Technology Co Ltd, a Bloomberg NEF-certified tier one global energy storage manufacturer.

“This landmark partnership formally initiates a joint commitment to localise battery energy storage solutions in Malaysia and establish supply and long-term maintenance service business strategy across the Asean region,” it said.

As part of this agreement, Shanghai Sermatec will transfer the full assembly of its Bess to Cape EMS’s manufacturing facility in Senai, Johor.

These systems will be locally manufactured and supplied with comprehensive insurance coverage and supported with a long-term operations and maintenance contract.

They will provide robust lifecycle coverage for institutional and commercial clients.

In addition to Bess assembly, Cape EMS, through its subsidiary Cape Renewables Sdn Bhd, will assume full responsibility for localised monitoring and management of both the battery management system and energy management system.

This end-to-end capability ensures seamless operations, faster technical support, and improved system efficiency for projects deployed across the region.

Cape EMS will serve as Shanghai Sermatec’s regional partner to produce, test and manage Bess products tailored for the South-East Asian market.

Cape EMS said: “Through this collaboration, Cape EMS is not only bringing global-standard Bess technology closer to home but also building the regional capability to support, maintain and scale clean energy infrastructure in Asean.”

Meanwhile, a representative from Shanghai Sermatec said Malaysia is a strategic base for its regional ambitions and that Cape EMS’s track record in engineering and renewable energy solutions makes it the ideal partner.

“By enabling local production and lifecycle management of our Bess units, we aim to offer our Asean clients more responsive, reliable and cost-effective energy storage options.”
