Melbourne: Rio Tinto Group’s first-quarter iron ore shipments fell 9% from the year before to a six-year low, after tropical cyclones disrupted exports from its key Australian terminal.

The miner shipped 70.7 million tonnes of the steelmaking material in the year’s first three months, a period in which production was affected “by extreme weather events that impacted our Pilbara iron ore operations,” chief executive officer Jakob Stausholm said in a statement yesterday.
