GEORGE TOWN: Taiwan-based Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc (ASE) will spend RM3bil to RM4bil to expand its operations in Penang until 2030.
ASE South-East Asia president Lee Kwai Mun said the group would increase its headcount from 3,000 to 6,000 by 2028 or 2029, adding that ASE spent RM4.7bil to build its fourth and fifth plants in Penang.
“The fourth plant was completed last year and the fifth facility recently,” he said.
Lee was speaking during a media briefing at the official launch of the fifth plant.
Present at the event were ASE chief executive officer Dr Tien Wu, Malaysian Investment Development Authority deputy chief executive officer Sivasuriyamoorthy Sundara Raja and Penang Deputy Chief Minister Jagdeep Singh Deo.
Tien said South-East Asia was increasingly becoming an important base for semiconductors, given its growing digital economy, which is propelling the demand for advanced chips, and its recent shift towards design and chip manufacturing.
“With Malaysia solidifying its position as a regional semiconductor hub, we see our expanded facility playing an even greater role across the global semiconductor value chain and contributing to the country’s economic growth.
“ASE remains committed to driving the development of the local and regional semiconductor industry while continuing to meet and exceed our customers’ needs and expectations,” he said.
ASE is a leading global provider of semiconductor manufacturing services in packaging and testing for semiconductors.
