PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Salim Fateh Din has been reappointed as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairman for another two years, effective March 1.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil made the extension of Salim’s tenure, which was set to expire on Feb 28, on Monday.

Salim, who first held the post on March 1, 2023, was previously an MCMC board member and served as its interim chairman from June 2022 to December 2022.

Under Salim’s leadership, MCMC recorded its best financial performance, achieving a net income of RM1.13bil last year.

This was a 38% increase from RM820.6mil the previous year.

The commission also reduced its operational expenditure by 21%, from RM524.8mil in 2022 to RM412.7mil last year, reflecting more optimal resource use.

Salim oversaw strategic agreements with organisations like the South Korea Internet and Security Agency, Blackberry Limited and Microsoft Malaysia to bolster Malaysia’s cybersecurity and artificial intelligence development.

MCMC is also working to develop Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, and Ipoh, Perak, into smart cities by equipping them with the necessary digital infrastructure and technology.

Salim is a shareholder of Malaysian Resources Corp Bhd and was a member of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s consultation and corruption prevention panel from April 2022 to March 2024.

In November, he was appointed as an adjunct professor at Multimedia University for a two-year period.

This was in recognition of his vast experience and contributions to the communications and multimedia sector.
