Maxis, IJM, and GlobalComm to bring smart connectivity to Penang’s waterfront development


Maxis partners IJM Perennial and GlobalComm to deliver integrated connectivity and smart city solutions to Penang’s latest iconic waterfront development

PETALING JAYA: Maxis Bhd has partnered with property developer IJM Perennial Development Sdn Bhd and GlobalComm Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, a provider of telecommunications infrastructure and IT services, to deliver integrated mobile and fixed connectivity to Penang’s latest iconic waterfront mixed-use development – The Light City.

IJM Perennial, the master developer of The Light City, is a joint venture between IJM Corp Bhd and Perennial Holdings Private Ltd.

In a statement, Maxis said it will also collaborate with IJM Perennial and GlobalComm to develop smart city solutions powered by 5G-Advanced and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies.

“These innovations will equip The Light City to be a future-ready development for its residents and businesses.”

Maxis chief executive officer Goh Seow Eng said the partnership will provide mobile and fixed connectivity, as well as solutions powered by 5G-Advanced and Internet of Things (IoT) technology for this future-ready smart city project.

“As Malaysia’s leading integrated telco, we are committed to providing fast, secure, and reliable connectivity.

“Our partnership positions The Light City at the forefront of technology, facilitating the adoption of innovative applications and services, and enhancing the overall living and working experience for the residents and businesses of this iconic development.”

IJM Corp group chief executive officer and managing director Lee Chun Fai said The Light City reflects the group’s commitment to thoughtful urban development that meets the evolving needs of our community.

“By partnering with Maxis and GlobalComm Telecommunications, we are equipping The Light City with essential 5G-ready infrastructure, ensuring robust connectivity that not only strengthens its position as a hub for business and leisure but also future-proofs the state’s digital infrastructure and aligns with the government’s digitalisation objectives.”

Meanwhile, GlobalComm Telecommunications Sdn Bhd managing director Stuart Kang said the partnership reinforced the company’s commitment to providing comprehensive connectivity solutions, catering to the diverse information and communications technology requirements of communities and development projects in the country.

Slated for phased completion starting in the first quarter of 2025, The Light City will feature Penang’s largest convention centre, the state’s biggest waterfront mall, international hotels, commercial and office towers, and luxury high-rise residences.

“The Light City is poised to be one of the catalysts for Penang’s economic growth, attracting both domestic and international visitors,” said Maxis.
