Telcos to focus on long-term profitability

Idham: we are firmly committed to driving 5G leadership while supporting the 5G partner ecosystem through smart investments in emerging technologies and cutting-edge solutions.

PETALING JAYA: Telecommunications companies (telcos) will be focusing on providing value-accretive services to customers as they strive towards long-term profitability.

CelcomDigi Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Idham Nawawi is confident the company will deliver a robust 2023, underpinned by precise execution of its strategic priorities.

“With the nation’s focus on increasing 5G developments, we are firmly committed to driving 5G leadership while supporting the 5G partner ecosystem through smart investments in emerging technologies and cutting-edge solutions.

“This will present significant experiences and benefits to our customers,” he said in the company’s latest annual report.

Maxis Bhd chairman Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir also said the company is committed to bringing 5G to the nation, which is in line with the government’s digital ambitions.

“We will continue to support the nation’s aspirations in strengthening its competitiveness in the region.

“We look forward to commercially launching 5G-related products and services as part of our suite of offerings,” he said in a statement in Maxis’ recently released annual report.

He noted growth of the Malaysian economy is expected to be moderate in 2023.

“While domestic demand is expected to remain robust during the year, slowing global growth due to macroeconomic conditions and supply chain disruptions will weigh on the domestic economy.

“Nevertheless, we remain cautiously optimistic of our prospects in the coming year, supported by greater political stability and increasing consumer demand for digital convergence.”

Additionally, Mokhzani said Maxis will continue to provide value accretive services and solutions for both its consumers and enterprise customers.

Maxis chief executive officer Goh Seow Eng, meanwhile, said he expects the telco industry to continue being a key contributor towards building a digital Malaysia.

“Despite the ongoing changes and industry consolidation, we are confident of our ability to thrive amid the evolving landscape.

“We remain agile and focused on delivering sustainable business growth by leveraging on our strengths in mobile, converged services, network and brand.

“As we strive towards long-term profitability, we will continue to reshape our operating model and cost structure.”

Goh said Maxis will also double down on its digitalisation agenda, which includes accelerating digital customer self-service and transitioning all business IT applications and infrastructure to the cloud.

“As we embark on the next chapter of our journey in 2023, we look forward to continuing delivering exceptional customer experiences, driving innovation and building a more connected and sustainable Malaysia,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kenanga Research in a recent report on the telco sector noted that Malaysia may introduce a second 5G network in 2024.

It pointed out that the second network rollout is contingent on the nation’s 5G coverage reaching 80% of the entire population by end-2023.

“We were not totally surprised by the news given the new government’s policy shake-ups in recent months.

“The unity government led by Pakatan Harapan is committed to dismantling monopolies and promoting competition.”

The research house said a second 5G network will be positive for the telco operators in terms of improved profitability.
